The Hammer Museum received a $100,000 grant from the Goldhirsh Foundation to implement Arts ReSTORE LA: Westwood. The Hammer was one of ten winners of the Goldhirsh Foundation’s My LA2050 challenge, which asked organizations across the city to address the region’s toughest challenges. On Westwood Boulevard, the main thoroughfare in the Village, and adjacent to the Hammer, several storefronts are vacant and turnover is high. The Hammer’s vision is to inspire the retail property owners of Westwood to tap the extraordinary creative community of Los Angeles as a strategy to activate the Village long term, by transforming Westwood into a vibrant community where consumers can buy unique, locally-made products.

Museum Store

With approximately ten thousand titles, the Museum Store is renowned for its extraordinary range of books (including hard-to-find titles) on art, architecture and design. Topics covered include contemporary art, architecture, design, photography, landscaping, drawing, art criticism, art history, decorative arts and environmentalism. The store also offers a unique selection of jewelry and gifts, and includes items handmade by local artists. In 2005, KCRW’s Ed Goldman declared the Hammer bookstore the best in Los Angeles. A year later, Los Angeles Magazine named the Hammer Store one of the Five Best Museum Gift Shops. In 2008 Los Angeles Magazine again recognized the Hammer Store, this time as the Best Children’s Bookstore in L.A. With more than 500 titles for young readers the children’s section of the Hammer Store stands out, carrying a unique array of books for readers from babies to preteens as well as a selection of artistic toys and unusual gifts for children. The store also offers environmentally friendly gifts for both children and adults. UCLA students, faculty, and staff always receive a ten percent discount. Members of the Museum and Friends of the Graphic Arts also receive discounts. The store is open during regular Museum hours.
